Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

Aerial view of Patina Maldives surrounded by turquoise waters and lush greenery.

The Pinnacle of Modern Maldivian Luxury. On my recent journey to the Maldives, I had the privilege of experiencing the sophisticated yet serene world of Patina Maldives, Fari Islands. This resort, the debut property of Patina Hotels & Resorts, the latest lifestyle brand by Capella Hotel Group, is a masterclass in modern luxury. Designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, Patina Maldives marries contemporary design with the natural beauty of the Maldives, creating a unique haven that is both luxurious and deeply connected to nature. But does it live up to the expectations? Let’s delve into the details.

Location

Located in the exclusive Fari Islands Maldives in the North Malé Atoll, Patina Maldives is just a 50-minute speedboat ride from Malé International Airport. The journey to the resort is a scenic prelude to the tranquil experience that awaits, with the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean setting the perfect tone.

Patina Maldives is set on the largest of the four man-made islands that form the Fari Islands Maldives archipelago. Surrounded by soft, golden beaches and crystal-clear lagoons, the resort offers a sense of seclusion while also providing the freedom to explore the neighboring resorts within the Fari Islands complex. Guests at Patina can easily move between Patina, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, and the soon-to-open Capella Maldives, offering a diverse and enriching stay that caters to different preferences.

Accommodation

Patina Maldives offers 90 exquisitely designed villas and studios, ranging from one to three bedrooms. Each accommodation is a perfect blend of modern luxury and comfort, whether located on the beach or perched over the turquoise waters of the lagoon. The villas feature floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open on three sides, allowing the tranquil sea breeze and warm sunlight to flow through, creating a seamless connection with the natural surroundings.

The interiors of the villas are adorned with earthy tones, custom-built furniture, and art by Brazilian photographer Cássio Vasconcellos, all of which add to the understated elegance of the space. The design reflects Marcio Kogan’s commitment to biophilic principles, creating a space where guests can feel deeply connected to the environment.

During my stay, I had the pleasure of experiencing the One-Bedroom Sunset Water Pool Villa 211, strategically positioned to capture the breathtaking Maldivian sunsets. The villa’s private deck, complete with a freestanding bathtub, sun loungers, and a hammock, quickly became my sanctuary for relaxation.

Dining

At Patina Maldives, dining is elevated to an art form. The resort features 12 exceptional dining venues, each offering a unique culinary journey that celebrates global flavors. From plant-based dishes to bold Latin American cuisine, the dining options at Patina cater to a wide range of tastes and preferences.

One of the highlights of my culinary experience was dining at Roots, the resort’s signature plant-based restaurant. Here, Chef Derrick Wales crafts innovative dishes using fresh ingredients sourced from Patina’s organic gardens. The creativity and care that go into each dish are evident, making it a memorable dining experience.

Fari Marina Village, the social heart of the Fari Islands Maldives, offers even more dining options. I particularly enjoyed Brasa, where the rich flavors of South America come alive through expertly grilled meats and seafood. The lively atmosphere and open kitchen made for a dining experience that perfectly complemented the island’s luxurious setting.

The Spa

The FLOW spa at Patina Maldives is a sanctuary of wellness and rejuvenation, set amidst lush tropical greenery. The spa features six treatment suites, a Watsu pool, and a flotation tank, all designed to restore balance and enhance well-being. The spa’s approach to wellness is holistic, with bespoke programs that combine movement, nutrition, and advanced therapies to promote overall vitality.

What sets the spa at Patina apart is its integration with the natural environment. Each treatment is designed to connect guests with the island’s tranquil surroundings, whether through the use of organic, plant-based products or the incorporation of natural elements into the therapy spaces. The result is a spa experience that is both deeply restorative and in harmony with the beauty of the Maldives.

Snorkelling and Activities

For those looking to explore beyond the villa, Patina Maldives offers a wide array of activities that cater to every interest. Whether it’s snorkeling around the vibrant coral reefs, embarking on a dolphin-spotting adventure aboard the futuristic Adastra superyacht, or enjoying a private dining experience in the intimate setting of Farine, there is something to fulfil every adventurer’s dream.

The resort’s commitment to art and culture is also evident in its curated collection of contemporary artworks, including the mesmerizing “Skyspace Amarta” by James Turrell. This installation invites guests to meditate under the open Maldivian sky, where the changing light creates a serene and introspective atmosphere.

Final Word - Patina Maldives

"Patina Maldives is a resort that harmonises modern luxury with vibrant social energy, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Maldives' natural beauty. Positioned just below the ultra-exclusive tier of Maldivian resorts like Cheval Blanc Randheli and Velaa Private Island, Patina carves out its own niche with a refined yet accessible luxury experience.

While there is about a 30% difference in price compared to these top-tier resorts, Patina Maldives offers an experience that is only a step away in quality and sophistication.

Yet, for guests who appreciate a socially engaged environment coupled with cutting-edge design, Patina Maldives presents an experience that is both enriching and unforgettable.

As I reflected on my final day at Patina, it was clear that this resort holds something truly special—a boldness in its approach, balanced with a gentle refinement. While it may not yet embody the secluded paradise of other high-end Maldivian resorts, it is undoubtedly on its way to becoming a prominent destination in its own right."
